MaxxiFlex front bottle with tablets

The best know supplements for joint health are Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate). Glucosamine helps maintain joint mobility and relieve joint pain, Chondroitin Sulfate provides connective tissue support and protects the cartilage, and Hyaluronic Acid give elasticity to joint and is important for tissue hydration, lubrication and cellular function.

Studies have shown better result of using Glucosamine and Chondroitin together, i.e. compared to using either substance on its own. For maximum results, high quality dog joint supplement should also include Hyaluronic Acid.

There are also many other active ingredients that have been shown to be beneficial for dog joint health. Like Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) which is important for connective tissue support and cartilage health. Cetylated Fatty Acids supports joint and connective tissue health and Bio Active Whey protein supports joint health by balancing immune and gut function. While antioxidants, like Calcium Ascorbate, can reduce free radicals, as well as minimize stress associated with great physical activity.

All drugs and supplement have potential side effects but the risk of adverse side effects of using dog joint supplement is considered extremely low. Occasionally dog may get mild stomach upset when on the high initial dose. Reducing the dose or give it with food is usually enough to alleviate the problem.

There are though circumstances where you should not give your dog any supplement without consulting your Vet first:

- If your bitch is pregnant or nursing
- If your dog has any existing health issues, e.g. related to liver and kidney function, or if your dog has stomach ulcer or diabetes
- If your dog is taking any NSAID medication

Glucosamine HCL

Core function: Maintain joint mobility, rebuild cartilage, relieve joint pain, and reduce joint inflammation.

What Is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a chemical compound that is produced naturally in the body. It's found in the fluid around the joints and is important building block for cartilage. It helps cartilage to act as a shock absorber.

Glucosamine comes in different forms, most commonly as Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL / HCl), Glucosamine Sulfate, and N-Acetyl-Glucosamine. The first two forms are most commonly used as canine Glucosamine but Glucosamine HCL is the highest quality, purest form of Glucosamine.

"Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) and glucosamine sulfate both work equally well in the cat and dog. The sulfate form was originally used in Europe. The HCl form has recently become more popular because it is purer and provides more available glucosamine per unit weight and contains much less residual ash" (MedicAnimal)

MaxxiFlex Plus includes high strength human grade Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL) for maximum effect.rotate-dragging-kid.jpg

The Source Of Glucosamine For Dogs

There aren't any natural food sources of Glucosamine. Glucosamine supplements are derived from chitin, substance found in the shells of shrimps, lobsters, and crabs. It can also be made in a laboratory.

The Glucosamine in MaxxiFlex Plus comes from shellfish source.

The Benefits Of Glucosamine Hydrochloride For Dogs

The cartilage acts as a shock absorber (cushion) for the joints, i.e. provides smooth surface between the bones to eliminate painful bone-on-bone contact. Over time, normal wear and tear can erode the cartilage, causing joint pain and inflammation.dog-xray-arthristi.jpg

Dogs with arthritis (estimated around 20% of dogs) suffer most as the cartilage can degrade to the point that the bones come into contact with each other. This is very painful and can seriously limit the dog's movements.

Glucosamine is the key building block for making cartilage and taking Glucosamine supplement may help to supply the materials needed to rebuild the cartilage. Other Glucosamine benefits include anti-inflammatory effects, as it may prevent swelling and inflammation in the joints (common in dogs with arthritis).

Chondroitin Sulfate

Core function: Protect existing cartilage, repair damaged cartilage, mild anti-inflammatory effect.

What Is Chondroitin Sulfate?

Chondroitin Sulfate is the major glycosaminoglycan (group of compounds) found in cartilage. Chondroitin attracts fluid inside the joints, helping to ensure adequate shock absorption and nourishment of the tissues that line the joint.

The Source Of Chondroitin For Dogs

Chondroitin for dogs includes either bovine or shark cartilage but animal cartilage is the only dietary source of Chondroitin. Both are equally effective but using shark cartilage is not recommended as it poses threat to the integrity of the world's oceans.

The Chondroitin used in MaxxiFlex Plus includes bovine cartilage.

The Benefits Of Chondroitin For Dogs

Like Glucosamine, Chondroitin for dogs may inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators that are destructive to the joint.

"Chondroitin sulfate may actually help the body to repair damaged cartilage and help restore joint integrity. It may also protect existing cartilage from premature breakdown as well as keep cartilage tissue hydrated and assist in cushioning impact stress" (petMD)

The body's Chondroitin production decreases with age. Dog joint supplement with Chondroitin are therefore considered especially helpful for older dogs with arthritis.

Action, maxxiflex

Glucosamine and Chondroitin for dogs are frequently used together as they are considered to improve each substance's beneficial effects. MaxxiFlex Plus includes high strength human grade Chondroitin Sulfate combined with Glucosamine HCL.

Hydrolyzed Collagen

Core function: Protect / increase lean muscle mass, help improve the symptoms of arthritis.

What Is Hydrolyzed Collagen?

Collagen is the main structural component of connective tissue (cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bones, skin). It helps the connective tissue to withstand great force without breaking down or tearing. Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals (25-30%) but the body's ability to produce and maintain collagen progressively declines after we reach adulthood.

Hydrolyzed Collagen is a modified form of collagen that is easier for the body to digest and absorb. It is composed of small amino acids (derived from bovine bone and cartilage) and helps to form new collagen in the body.Brochure, Report, MaxxiFlex, Joints

The Benefits Of Hydrolyzed Collagen For Dogs?

There are various claims about the health benefits of hydrolyzed collagen. What matters for dogs joint health is its potential ability to protect (and even increase) lean muscle mass and to help improve the symptoms of arthritis.

There are Clinical Studies available that show that oral ingestion of hydrolyzed collagen decreases joint pain and increases bone mass density (as well as various other potential health benefits). Other clinical trials have yielded mixed results.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

Core function: Source of sulfur for cartilage health, anti-inflammatory benefits.

What Does MSM Mean?

The full name for MSM is Methylsulfonylmethane, a naturally occurring sulfur (sulphur) compound found in the body. MSM is the source of sulfur in the body but sulfur is essential chemical needed for the synthesis of cartilage.

The Source Of MSM For Dogs

MSM is found in variety of foods, like meat, fish, eggs, milk and to a lesser amount in fruits and vegetables. Some MSM is lost during storage and food preparation and the amount of MSM decreases with age, meaning supplementing MSM may be required.

MSM is often included in dog joint supplements containing Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

The Benefits Of MSM For Dogs

The cartilage in a dog with arthritis has about one third of the concentration of sulfur when compared to healthy cartilage. MSM is therefore highly beneficial for arthritic dogs as it provides sulfur used by the cartilage in the healing process. It may have anti-inflammatory benefits as well.

Fructooligosaccharides

Core function: Better absorption of calcium, magnesium, and iron, resulting in better bone density and strength.

Action, maxxiflex

What Is Fructooligosaccharides

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are made up of plant sugars (fructose) that are linked together in chains. FOS is found naturally in asparagus, onions, banana, wheat, garlic, soybeans, artichoke, tomatoes and other fruits, vegetables and grains. It can also be manufactured in laboratories.

The Benefits Of Fructooligosaccharides For Dogs?

Fructooligosaccharides are best known for stimulating beneficial flora growth in the digestive tract, i.e. acting as a prebiotic.

Recent Studies have shown that FOS is also ideal for maintaining mineral density and bone strength. It increases mineral content in the bones and supports joint health, i.e. through better absorption of calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Bio Active Whey

Core function: Supports joint health by balancing immune and gut function.

What Is Bio Active Whey Protein?

Whey Protein is a mix of globular proteins that are isolated from whey (the liquid by-product of cheese production).

The Benefits Of Bio Active Whey

Bio Active Whey protein supports joint health by balancing immune and gut function. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory  properties as well (Wikipedia).
