MaxxiSAMe Ingredients

Support Good Liver Health & Cognitive Function

MaxxiSAMe is an advanced SAM-e supplement for dogs and cats. The key ingredient is of course SAM-e but SAM-e offers various health benefits for both humans and pets.

There is a general professional consensus that SAM-e supplementation can benefit liver health and cognitive function in both dogs and cats.

MaxxiSAMe does not only contain SAM-e. It also contains ingredients that effectively support good liver health and cognitive function in pets, as well as support the absorption of SAM-e.

Artichoke

MaxxiSAMe contains Cynara Scolymus. It is a member of the milk thistle family and better known under its common name Globe Artichoke.

MaxxiSAMe-with-scoop-web.jpg

The Artichoke's main plant contains a long list of constituents, including cynarin (the main constituent), silymarin and caffeic acid that have all been shown to be effective for liver health.

MaxxiSAMe contains Artichoke Leaf Extract 4:1 concentrate (which means that 4 kgs of starting material will result in 1 kg of extracted material when the starting material is extracted with a solvent).

This is concentrated plant material, not standardized extract. Meaning it contains a whole host of constituents, not just one. So while Globe Artichoke contains silymarin it is just one of the constituent. Other ingredients, especially cynarin and caffeic acid are as important for liver health.

"Artichoke protects liver from poisonous effects of toxins in a manner similar to silymarin from milk thistle. It is able to prevent liver damage from the same wide range of poisons as milk thistle. Artichoke extract is also able to stimulate the regeneration of liver cells in much the same manner as does silymarin" (Rain-Tree).

One study found artichoke extract to demonstrate a significant antioxidant effect capable of protecting liver cells from damage. In addition, the artichoke extract hindered liver cancer in human liver cells. Another study found that artichoke leaf extract decreased fat and cholesterol levels in the liver. (Liver Support).

Artichoke stimulates the production of bile in the liver as well as the discharge of bile from the system. These two functions are very important to the liver’s well-being. As a natural diuretic and choleretic, artichokes stimulate bile production, improves gallbladder function and aid in a more efficient breakdown of foods for overall improved digestion (Underground Health Reporter).

Choline Bitartrate

Choline is an essential micronutrient. It is vital for healthy liver function and normal brain development. This is why MaxxiSAMe contains Choline Bitartrate (40% Choline cation).

Choline deficiency causes muscle damage and abnormal deposition of fat in the liver, which results in a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Choline is therefore used for liver disease, including chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Choline is also used for various human mental conditions, like depression, memory loss, Alzheimer's disease and dementia, Huntington's chorea, Tourette's disease, a brain disorder called cerebellar ataxia, certain types of seizures, and schizophrenia.

Dogs and cats can also develop degenerative brain diseases, known as feline or canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (sometimes also called feline and canine dementia).

Animal studies have shown that Choline is essential for optimal brain development and influences cognitive function in later life (Oregon State University).

Inositol

Inositol (sometimes called Vitamin B8) is one of the B complex vitamins (though not officially recognized as vitamin as it can be synthesized in the body from glucose). Inositol is present in all body tissue but with the highest concentration in the brain, heart and eye lens.

Inositol is involved in the production and action of neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit messages between nerve cells). Inositol has been shown to have calming effect, hence one of the key ingredients in MaxxiCalm Calming Aid for Dogs. Inositol is used for many mental disorders, like depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic attacks.

Fear and anxiety is understandably among the symptoms of cat / dog dementia. The calming effect of Inositol can help aging pets to cope better with their declining mental state.

What's more, when Choline and Inositol are combined they work together to build the cell membranes. Both provide a lipotropic effect as result of their role in transporting fat from the liver, i.e. they act on fat metabolism by hastening removal, or decreasing the deposit, of fat in the liver.

B Vitamins

MaxxiSAMe contains various B Vitamins. All of the B Vitamins are essential for the liver to perform its multitude of metabolic functions.

Supplementation with B Vitamins is generally recommended for pets with hepatobiliary diseases (the hepatobiliary system refers to the liver, gall bladder and bile ducts, and how they work together to make bile).

MaxxiSAMe contains the necessary Vitamins B so you don’t have to buy or administer them separately. B vitamins also help with the absorption of SAM-e.

B vitamins help the body to convert food (carbohydrates) into fuel (glucose), which is used to produce energy. These B vitamins, often referred to as B complex vitamins, also help the body to use fats and protein. B complex vitamins are needed for healthy skin, hair, eyes, and liver. They also help the nervous system to function properly (University of Maryland Medical Center).

The B vitamins in MaxxiSAMe are:

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)

As well as supporting liver health and brain function, Thiamine may strengthen the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions. But being disorientated and confused is without a doubt very stressful for our pets.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin works as an antioxidant by fighting damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. B2 is also needed to help the body change vitamin B6 into form it can use and is important for body growth and red blood cell production.

Vitamin B5 (D-Pantothenic Acid)

Vitamin B5 is critical for the manufacturing of red blood cells. It is also important in maintaining a healthy digestive tract and helps the body use other vitamins (not least Riboflavin).

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride)

Vitamin B6 helps the body to make several neurotransmitters, i.e. chemicals that carry signals from one nerve cell to another. It is therefore needed for normal brain development and function, and helps the body to make the hormones serotonin and norepinephrine, which influence mood, and melatonin, which helps regulate the body clock.

The body also needs Vitamin B6 in order to absorb vitamin B12 and to make red blood cells and cells of the immune system.

Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin)

Vitamin B12 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells, and it helps in the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material. What's more, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B9 (folic acid) work together to produce S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), a compound involved in immune function and mood.

The Base

The powder base used in MaxxiSAMe also provides immune and hormone function properties. The base contains defatted flax, sunflower, and sesame seed fibre. This is a concentrated form of fibre supplying nearly double the lignan content from what is in whole flaxmeal.

Fibre And Lignans For Dogs And Cats

Fibre is important to cleanse the intestinal tract. It scrubs away debris and creates environment that allows the good bacteria to flourish (as fibre is the only food source for good bacteria, i.e. prebiotics). Without the flourishing good bacteria, the immune system and nutrient absorption suffers.

This means MaxxiSAMe can work faster than products that contain only actives. Actives that go into a sluggish inflamed intestinal tract can simply pass on by without being utilized.

Lignans are a group of chemical compounds found in plants. Lignans are high in antioxidants and fibre, and have anti-estrogenic effects, i.e. may help to regulate the hormone levels.

MaxxiSAMe liver brain

Lignans offers various health benefits for our pets. Being high in antioxidants, they support the immunes system. While the hormone balancing properties of Lignans means they are beneficial for both male and female animals that have been spayed or neutered.

Lignans has also been shown to be beneficial for Canine Cushings Disease. Cushing's disease in dogs (Feline Cushings Disease is very rare) is the overproduction of the stress hormone Cortisol. Lignans inhibits HSD enzyme that may reduce the Cortisol. For dogs' suffering from Canine Cushing Disease, higher amount of lignans would though be required on a daily basis.

The bottom line is that Lignans offers various health benefits for pets of both sexes.

The base in MaxxiSAMe is therefore one of the MaxxiSAMe ingredients. It is not just a filling, it has its own health benefits for cats and dogs.
